Tarot Spread
A classic spread for tracing how a situation unfolds.
The past present future tarot spread is the classic three-card timeline, and it differs from a general three-card reading in one important way: the positions are explicitly temporal. You are not reading situation and advice, you are reading a sequence in time.
That makes it excellent for a specific job, understanding how something arrived at its current state, and mediocre at the job people usually give it, which is predicting what happens next. The past card is almost always the one that changes your mind.
3 positions, read in order. Fix what each position means before you shuffle — deciding after you see the card is how a reading starts confirming what you already believed.
Position 1
The roots of the situation.
Position 2
What is unfolding now.
Position 3
The direction the energy may move toward.
When not to use it: Avoid it for questions with no meaningful history: a brand-new situation gives the past position nothing to describe, and you will end up inventing a backstory to fill it. Use a situation–obstacle–advice frame instead.
Step 1
Decide what 'past' means for this question before you draw: the last month, the last year, the whole relationship. An undefined past position will absorb whatever explanation is most convenient.
Step 2
Past on the left, present in the centre, future on the right. Place all three before turning any of them.
Step 3
This position rarely names a specific incident. It describes the condition the situation grew out of: the assumption, dynamic, or decision that set the terms.
Step 4
The useful question is what changed. If the present card contradicts the past card, that break is the reading. If it repeats it, you are looking at a pattern rather than a phase.
Step 5
This card describes where current momentum points if nothing changes, which makes it a description of your default, not your fate. Naming the default is what makes it possible to choose otherwise.
Step 6
Close by writing the one thing that would alter the trajectory. That sentence is what you will want when you re-read this entry in three months.
The Two of Cups in the past describes a genuinely mutual bond. This did not start out lopsided, which rules out the story you may have been telling yourself. The Four of Swords in the present is not conflict; it is rest, withdrawal, a pause neither person has framed as a problem. The Six of Cups ahead points to the connection continuing on nostalgia, the shared history keeping it alive rather than current investment. That is not a bad outcome, but naming it lets you choose: let it become a warm, low-contact friendship, or put present-tense effort back in. The spread's value here was the past card correcting a false premise.
Without a defined window, the past card will be read as whichever period makes the reading fit. Set it before the shuffle.
It shows the trajectory of current conditions. Every reading of this spread should end with 'if nothing changes' attached to the third card.
People rush to the future position and give the past a sentence. In practice the past card does most of the work, because it is the one most likely to contradict your assumptions.
It is a three-card timeline: the first card describes the conditions the situation grew out of, the second what is active now, and the third where current momentum points if nothing changes. It is strongest for understanding how something developed.
As far as you define before drawing. The position has no fixed range, so set the window explicitly (the last month, the last year, the whole relationship) or the card will be read to fit whatever story is most convenient.
No. Read it as the trajectory of current conditions rather than a sealed outcome. That is what makes the first two cards the useful part of the spread. They show what would have to change.
The layout is identical; the positions differ. This spread fixes all three positions to time. A general three-card spread can use any three positions, such as situation, obstacle, and advice, which suits questions with no meaningful history.
