Temperance as a Year Card
A Temperance year blends. Temperance pours between two vessels, testing proportion rather than splitting the difference, and a year under it tends to follow something extreme and ask you to integrate it. Recovery, moderation and recombination are the work, and none of them happen quickly.

What the year asks of you
A card page describes a card. It has no clock. This is the part that only makes sense once the card is attached to twelve months you have to live through.
That you find the proportion rather than the midpoint. Temperance is frequently flattened into compromise, which is a different and lazier thing. The card mixes to a specific ratio that has to be tested, and the right ratio is rarely half and half.
That you let recovery take the time it takes. Years under this card often follow a Death or Tower year, and the impulse to be finished with recovering is the main thing that extends it.
That you combine things that have been kept apart. Two parts of a life run separately, two skills, two people who have never met. Temperance years are where those get put in the same container, and the result is usually more useful than either alone.

The card's most literal application, and the one people most often ignore. Temperance years reward moderate, sustained adjustment and punish dramatic overhaul, which is unwelcome news to anyone arriving from a year that required intensity.
In relationships
Repair, and the unglamorous version of it. The card is patient and unromantic about reconciliation: things get better through a long series of small correct adjustments rather than through one conversation, and expecting the conversation is how the year gets wasted.

The common misreading
Often said: Temperance means balance, so this is a calm, moderate year where everything evens out.
More accurately: Balance is the keyword that has done the most damage to this card. Temperance is active mixing requiring judgement about proportion, and judgement is effortful in a way that evening out is not. A year under it is not a year things settle by themselves. It is a year spent testing ratios, and getting them wrong repeatedly is part of the method.
