What is a tarot year card?
The Major Arcana card for the year you are currently living through. Add your birth month, your birth day and the current four-digit year, then sum the digits until the result falls between 1 and 21. That number is your year card, and it changes every January.
What is the difference between a year card and a birth card?
One number. A birth card uses the year you were born and is fixed for life; a year card swaps in the year you are living through. The birth card describes a standing pattern in a person, the year card describes a period. They are frequently confused because most sites explain one and never mention the other.
How many tarot year cards are there?
Thirteen in any given year, not twenty-two. The total is bounded by the calendar: it cannot be lower than 1 + 1 + the year or higher than 12 + 31 + the year, and the digit sums of that band only cover part of the Major Arcana. The same thirteen cover every year from 2026 to 2035.
When does the year card change?
On 1 January, because the calculation uses the calendar year. Some readers run it from birthday to birthday instead, which shifts the boundary for anyone born after January. Both conventions are in use and neither is authoritative, so it is worth knowing which one you are reading.
Does the year card need my birth year?
No, and the calculator does not ask for it. Only the month and the day of your birthday go into the sum, along with the current year. The most identifying field on this site is one it has no reason to collect for this.
The other calculation
Swap 2026 for the year you were born and the same arithmetic gives your birth card, which never changes. Most people looking for one of these turn out to want both.
