A Death year ends something. Death describes transformation through completion rather than loss, so the year tends to close a chapter that had already stopped working, whether or not you were ready to admit it. What the card takes is rarely a surprise afterwards. What it clears is space.

What the year asks of you
A card page describes a card. It has no clock. This is the part that only makes sense once the card is attached to twelve months you have to live through.
That you let the ending be clean. Death years go worst for people who negotiate: half-leaving a job, half-ending a relationship, keeping a version of the thing alive on reduced terms. The card has no partial setting and the partial attempts extend the year.
That you look at what you have been preserving out of loyalty. Most of what a Death year removes had been finished for some time and maintained out of habit or obligation. Naming that first makes the year survivable.
That you resist filling the space immediately. The card is followed in the deck by Temperance, not by another beginning. Years under it that get rushed into a replacement tend to reproduce the thing that just ended.

Jobs left, businesses closed, fields exited. Death years rarely contain a gentle transition and frequently contain a decisive one. The people who do best treat the decision as already made and spend the year executing it rather than relitigating it monthly.
In relationships
Endings, and also the end of a version of something that continues. Not every Death year separates people; some of them end a dynamic that had run its course inside a relationship that survives it, and that reading is available more often than the dramatic one.
In how it feels
Heavier than the year deserves in the first half, lighter than expected in the second. The dread is usually worse than the event, which is a pattern specific enough to this card to be worth saying in advance.

The common misreading
