A reversed card is almost never the opposite of its upright meaning. It is the same energy under friction — blocked, turned inward, or running to excess. Which of those three you read is your choice; making that choice before you shuffle is what keeps reversals meaningful.
The three ways to read a reversal
Blocked or delayed
The upright meaning is present but not moving: the energy is stuck, resisted, or waiting on something. The most common convention, and the gentlest: a reversed card describes friction rather than absence.
Internalised
The card's energy is turned inward rather than outward. Reversed Strength is courage you are spending on yourself rather than showing the world. Useful for readings about your own state rather than a situation.
The shadow side
The excess or deficiency of the upright meaning, generosity curdled into depletion, confidence into arrogance. The sharpest convention, and the easiest to over-read into doom if you are not careful.
The reversed meanings listed below are written in the first convention — blocked, resisted, or delayed — because it is the most common and the least likely to be over-read. If you work with one of the others, they translate cleanly.
How to read reversed cards well
Pick one convention and hold it
All three readings above are legitimate. Switching between them mid-reading, or picking whichever fits the answer you wanted, is what makes reversals feel arbitrary. Choose before you shuffle.
Decide whether you read reversals at all
Plenty of experienced readers do not, and take the same nuance from surrounding cards instead. That is a real choice, not a shortcut. What matters is consistency, so your own readings stay comparable over time.
A reversal is not a 'no'
Reversed cards lean no more often than upright ones, but the relationship is not automatic. Read the card's own meaning rather than treating the orientation as a verdict.
Reversed does not mean bad
Some of the deck's hardest cards soften when reversed: a reversed Tower can be upheaval you saw coming or a collapse averted. Orientation changes the reading; it does not set its temperature.
Shuffle so reversals can actually appear
If you always shuffle the same direction, no card will ever come up reversed. Rotating part of the deck occasionally, or shuffling side to side, is what makes the orientation meaningful rather than decorative.
